Hedvig Mollestad: Tempest Revisited

Hedvig Mollestad: Tempest Revisited

Hedvig Mollestad must surely be one of the hardest working musicians on the Norwegian music scene at the moment, with “Tempest Revisited” being her third album in a mere 18 months, all at a consistently high artistic level. Her first solo album, “Ekhidna” (2020), received a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy), appeared on several jazz and rock best of the year lists and got her into Downbeat´s “25 for the future” selection. “Tempest Revisited” draws lines back to 1998 and the very beginning of Rune Grammofon.

Any Day Now (MMO-Ensemble, 2018)

Any Day Now (MMO-Ensemble, 2018)

The music of MMO-Ensemble runs the gauntlet between intellectual and emotional, abstract and evocative, imposing and intimate, frenetic and tranquil. These explorations carry a uniquely sensual experience that appeals both to the higher mind and to pure instinct.

Urolige sinn (Wako, 2018)

Urolige sinn (Wako, 2018)

"Urolige sinn" – the new album from Wako – is equal parts atmosphere and energy. Smoky moods envelop runaway train rhythms, while the contemplative can seem like a mask for a chaos ready to erupt at any second. This is a series of dramaturgical tone poems, triple-distilled concepts, their purity and brevity carrying only the essential sounds – but you shouldn't take this as meaning "minimalism": here it means intense concentration, perfect focus. This is realism walking in expressionist shoes along a well-paved path.

This quintet is made up of five of the finest jazz musicians in Scandinavia today, stretching three generations. The music is vital and a touch humoristic, the 60s jazz-music from the USA being a big influence. Bjørn Marius' compositions stretches for something explicit and original, making the music new and very much alive.

New Beginnings (MNJ Youth Orchestra, 2018)

New Beginnings (MNJ Youth Orchestra, 2018)

MNJ Youth Orchestra offers young musicians in the Trondheim area (Mid-Norway) a unique way to explore original music and improvisation. The ensemble consists of students between 16-20 years old, and are led by inspiring young composers/ instrumentalists from the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. The idea is to give the young musicians a lot of new input, and therefore they can play everything from arranged Monk tunes to vocal solos by Morton Feldman and compositions by the musical director. MNJ Youth Orchestra wants to inspire them to do their own thing!

Every year the ensemble play concerts at Molde Jazzfestival and Jazzfest in Trondheim, and they also do concerts at various music high schools in Mid-Norway.
